Christians live with many tensions in their lives. Living in two worlds at one time offers its own unique kind of tension. We live in a world that requires grocery stores, gas stations, and bill paying. We engage in all the dynamics required of humans. Every day we make decisions about things that are right and wrong. We make choices not only between good and bad but also between good, better, and best. It’s complicated.
Then, there is the other world. We call it the kingdom of God. You can’t see it. It has no boundaries. The person sitting next to you on a bus to the City might have no idea that you live in two worlds. Our understanding of that kingdom of God impacts, or should impact, everything we do in the tangible world. Our residence in God’s kingdom gives us almost unlimited opportunities to impact the world of sight, sound, smell, and touch.
That has always been God’s plan for His people—that they would influence the world around them. He intended that His people become light in the darkness, truth among the lies, people of justice in a world filled with injustice. Our faithful God, making us part of two worlds at the same time, calls us to live as His people among those who aren’t His people. That calling is both a challenge and a privilege.
The tensions that come from living in two worlds at the same time don’t go away. They may be stronger at some times, and less demanding at other times. Enabled by the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit, we can be the people of God when and where He needs us. We can speak justice when needed. We can show compassion when needed. We can confront evil in our world when we see it. Sometimes it won’t be so hard. Sometimes it will be really hard. Since we represent God with His power, we always have what we need when we need it.
Jesus came to this world to show people the way to His world, the Kingdom of God. If we know Jesus, we share His calling and continue His effort. We see His calling in fullest detail during Holy Week, the week we began yesterday with Palm Sunday. I pray God will help us enter into Jesus’ life in freshening and deepening ways as we journey with Him this week. May He use as bridges between two worlds!
